Watching the Dick Van Dyke Show

I LOVE this show. Today I was thinking a lot about why I love it so much.
Outside of it being hilarious, and all these great comedy pieces of it. I love how it celebrates married and single women well.

I feel like that is a funny thing to say about a show that was made in the early 1960's, but it is so true. Sally is a single lady, and she has a pretty fabulous job, and though she is struggling with singleness, she still thrives in it.
I love watching how Rob interacts with her. He treats her like a peer, he doesn't look down on her at all for being single but protects her in an excellent way. He isn't her man, but since she is man-less, he makes sure that she is okay. He watches out for her in a cool way.

This show also honors married women. Laura is a stay-at-home mom and does everything that a good housewife should do, but Rob doesn't have this submissive control over her. Instead Laura eagerly submits to him. She isn't afraid to let her know what is going on in her life. Rob is her person. They have this super cool friendship within their marriage. You can tell that they love each other and do life better because they have each other.

But this is what I love. I love how everyone treats Sally, even though she is single at parties. She is still invited. She is still involved. I feel like she isn't ever the poor sad single girl. Instead, people enjoy being around her. They don't make her feel unwelcomed or less because she doesn't have a man on her arm. Instead, she blends right in.

This old show makes me so happy. You should look it up and watch it. It is WAY better than you think it is if you haven't ever watched it. The black and white picture grows on you, and you may even prefer it over color shows. It's on both Youtube and Hulu. You really should watch a few episodes today; it will warm your heart.
